5 Songs For The Election Aftermath

The past few days have been rough to say the least. Aside from the leader of the free world being a man with zero political experience, I’m concerned with the emotional turmoil that’s taking place around me. It’s scary to see so many people suddenly living in fear. My own emotions have gone from disbelief, to sadness, to anger yet somehow through all of the chaos, I’ve managed to come out with a newfound sense of strength. Now, more than ever, I realize that I cannot be silent. I have to use my voice to speak out about the things I believe in, to stand up for those who can’t and encourage others to do their part to continue being an agent of change. The most important way for me to be able to do that is to take care of myself first. Self-care comes in many forms: exercise, candlelit bubble-baths, good food, writing, etc. I usually turn to pen and paper but lately, I’ve been letting music do the talking. Here are some songs that are helping me get through the aftermath of the election:

Keep Ya Head Up, Tupac

His message to women is dope and that’s what we all need right now. ” Please don’t cry, dry your eyes, never let up. Forgive but don’t forget, girl, keep ya head up.” Things might seem impossible right now but we have to find the strength to persevere and the willpower to keep pushing forward even though the odds are against us.

If I Ruled the World, Nas feat. Lauryn Hill

This song makes me think of all the things I would change about the world we’re living in. Being a TexasEx, I’m constantly telling myself, “What starts here, changes the world.” I gotta be that change. It starts now.

Despierta, Snow Tha Product

Mi gente, we need to come together. Wake up. Don’t be afraid to be who you are or ashamed of your culture, ever. We’re beautiful and diverse and we are here. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Freedom, Beyonce feat. Kendrick Lamar

Two powerful forces coming together to deliver a message of resilience. We’ve come too far, made too much progress, too many sacrifices to quit now. “I’ma keep running’ cuz a winner don’t quit on themselves.” (Sound may be distorted since it’s a live performance. Beyonce has her music on lock so listen on Spotify or Apple Music.)

Knuck If You Buck, Crime Mob

This song gets me hype any time the occasion calls for it and what better time than now?  When it comes on, GET OUT OF MY WAY. I love this because my personal mantra is: Don’t talk about it, be about it. Do what you gotta do, be mad but organize those feelings into something productive. “Enough is enough, boy…Knuck if you buck, boy.”

Take what you need from this list. Build off of it. Most importantly, take care of yourself. Tomorrow is a new day.
