In America about 45 million people are currently living in poverty. Statistically speaking 1 out of every 2 americans are considered poor. But what if meditation could change that? What if we could change the mindsets of people through meditation that allows them to understand that their environment can be changed with the power of their mind?

Coming from where I was raised, there was never a day in my life where I thought of possibly meditating. Most of us who come from underprivileged homes see meditation as something hippies do on their spare time. When you grow up in the ghettos of america the word “meditation” NEVER crosses your mind. But what if we were to show these kids from low income families that mediation could change the outcome of their life? What if those kids being brought up in rough neighborhoods realized that with meditation they could go on to live a more peaceful and prosperous life?

Never in a million years did I ever imagine myself meditating on a day to day basis. Meditation was something I didn’t believe had a purpose behind it. There were times where I tried it out but within a couple of days I gave up on it and called it a “load of bullshit”. Of course if you’re never consistent with something you’ll never achieve the end goal, but my theory was always, if I didn’t get results then and there it wasn’t worth my time; instant gratification.

It’s not until I began to search for inner peace that I began to accept the principles of meditation towards my own life. My first attempts were pretty lousy, I was only able to sit still for about 5 minutes and I decided to opt out and add another 5 minutes the next meditation session. But instead of quitting I kept attempting it over and over again. Little by little I was able to rest my mind and thoughts for longer periods of time. 5 minutes turned into 10 and finally 20 minutes. Not only did I find peace for those couple of minutes of rest, but I began to feel more alive and appreciative of the little things that surrounded me. I fell in love with it and now I understand why this isn’t a load of bullshit. It’s become a part of my morning routine.

So what if instead of drug dealing and gang violence we promoted meditation throughout our neighborhoods? Could you imagine how society would drastically change? Instead of violence amongst people we could all come together as one and try to find a solution to any problem. Peacefully. Maybe my ideologies are very optimistic, but hey, we have to start somewhere. Instead of trying to figure out reasons why something like this wouldn’t work, lets make changes happen now amongst our own communities.

Meditation is not based of any religion or belief, it simply a practice for one to find inner peace. Anyone can partake in meditation and I can promise you it’s not a load of bullshit. I’m not some sort of advocate or preacher for meditation, but I’ll be the first to tell you it works. Kids from the same streets I grew up in are probably reading this and thinking I’m crazy, but all I can say is just trust me. Practice meditation a couple days a week and watch how your life changes beneath your eyes. It allows your mind to come to rest from all of the madness and chaos that surrounds us. You learn to become more aware of the negative energy that surrounds our community and you begin to search for change.

I am not a product of my environment because our environment only taught us how to fail. I knew better and wanted more than what society wanted for me, so I went out and searched for the answers of life. I brought in peace from within and learned to recognize what I needed to change in order to make a difference in the world. I’m not a perfect human being and I’ve made mistakes throughout my life but my mistakes and failures will never define who I am as a human being. I know better, I strive for better.

I cant change the world alone, we all have to play our part. Through meditation and finding inner peace, I know we can attain that. This article might not change the world, but hey it’s a start. Here are a couple tips on meditating for beginners:

  1. Location means everything. Find a peaceful and comfortable setting throughout your home.
  2. Sit on a cushions to take the pressure off your spine
  3. Cross legs, don’t force your body to do anything that it’s not comfortable doing. (Not too tight and not too loose.)
  4. Posture is everything.
  5. Keep your eyes open in order to prevent falling asleep.
  6. Breathe nice and slow. Don’t force your breathing
  7. Thoughts WILL cross your mind, but always come back to your breath.
  8. Amount of time you meditate does not matter as long as you do it.

We are the change, we just have to realize it for ourselves and I truly believe meditation could help us get there as a society. Give your mind a breather from the madness.

  1. I sort of meditate whenever I can. I use my calm.com app, which is on my smartphone, whenever I can. I’m sort of meditating while I use that app. It almost always relaxes me whenever I’m tense or stressed out about things.

  2. What an interesting perspective. I think all kids should be taught to meditate from an early age. Nothing but good comes from meditation and like you said it doesn’t conflict with any religion. My daughter is 7 and I’ve been teaching her to meditate and it has worked wonders! I have taught her how to center and ground herself so while she’s at school she can concentrate and do her best in school and not let the chatter around her distract her. It helps her focus and gives her confidence before tests. She does guided meditation before bed. In frustrating situations she’ll even take a deep breath and center herself before letting herself get worked up.

    This post reminds me of the quote that I think the Dali Lama said that if every 8 year old were taught to meditate, violence would be eliminated in one generation. Whether true or not, I can’t help but think the world would definitely be a better place! Kudos to you for being so forward thinking.

    Personally I started meditating off and on a few years ago. At first I didn’t understand how people could do it and enjoy it. I got more into it recently during a February blog challenge I participated in that had mindfulness as the theme for Mondays. It was very interesting to me and I started to like it more and more. I ended up going to a weekend retreat that was focused on meditation and Friday will be 33 days that I’ve been meditating consistently. It has been amazing! I have never felt better- mentally, physically or spiritually.

      • I never saw the notification for your reply. I can’t believe it’s only been 5 days since I read this post. So much has changed in my life and so many good things have started to manifest. Meditation is such a powerful tool. I can only hope that my daughter will be better equipped to handle the hurdles in her life with the tools I’m passing onto her.     As a teacher, I have seen meditation work wonders for students of all ages, especially those with Autism, ADHD and other issues. With children, guided, short meditations are best. For adults, it is of greatest importance to be in whatever position is most comfortable – sitting up, laying down, etc. Also, have no expectations, don’t force yourself to have a clear mind but instead allow the thoughts to come forward, acknowledge them and then allow the next ones, and so on and so forth. Eventually the thoughts will decrease but they will always be present. Finally, it’s okay if you fall asleep. :)

It’s important not to force anything on kids because they’re attention span is very short, but I think teaching them about the importance of meditation will help them in the long run.
