Guest Post | My Way to Becoming a Successful Writer

I once heard that writing is a talent, which is given at the moment you were born. Nothing can change it: you cannot nurse it if you do not have it. And if you have it, it will stay with you forever. So I asked how to define that a person is blessed with writing? And I got no answer. Because there is no such thing as born with a talent. You can have some tendencies and you can be better with words than with numbers, but it will never make you a successful writer. It is just a material, and nothing more. I believe that only a person with a defined aim to become a good writer can get what he or she wants. It takes time and really hard work. Everything comes with a price.

I paid my price. And now I’m ready to share some secrets with you. They will only give you a right direction, though. Everything else depends on you. Good luck!

1. Write. And write. And write.

The first thing you need to do to become a successful writer is to write. Take the words and play with them. Do not be afraid to write. Let’s be honest – practice makes everything perfect. In writing, it helps define your own style, create the flow of words, make your readers join your world. Be precise with your words. Be honest with them. Just write.

If you do not want to write… Make an effort. Start to write and observe what happens. First sentences may be a little bit confusing, fissured. But the next sentences will make your speech flow. If you have written a couple of pages and understood that nothing happens, take a walk. When you come back, write again. This is the only way to turn on your writing activity into a natural state of your mind.

2. Reading is blessing

Reading is blessing for everyone, and for a writer, it is one of the most effective ways to discover the world. Painters discover the world through the colors, we make it through the words. So don’t be lazy to read. Read everything you can. Read bad stories, read good stories. Read books, read magazines. Enrich your vocabulary, master the accuracy of your words, look how other writers use the same words to express different ideas, and look how different words can express the same ideas.

3. Find your purpose

Why do you write? If you do not understand why you write, you cannot become a successful writer. You need to understand your purpose: perhaps, you write for fun, or for business, or you just feel that you cannot keep all your thoughts is your head. Perhaps, this is the desire to share your experience with other people. Define your purpose. It took me a couple of years to understand exactly why I am writing. I thought it over and over again, I stuck to different ideas to finally find the one. You know, it is like love – it guides you through all your love, but the real love happens only once.

4. Love your readers

Writing is not only about reading and compounding sentences. It is about sharing. Do not be shy to share your writing with other people. Whatever you write, you will find readers. Today a writer has so many ways to express his talent! Create a blog. Write on Facebook. Invite your friends to join your community. Show them your art. In writing, people are the success. If they love you, if they appreciate what you do, if they always wait for you, you are a successful writer. And it does not matter how many readers you have – 10 or 10,000.

5. Criticism is your god

Be critical. Let your readers be critical. Let everyone criticize you. Still, stay wise. Criticism is a necessary. It helps you understand what you should do to become successful. But it is too strong pill. It may kill your creativity. So take it easily. And work with this criticism. Compare how people who do not know you and your friends criticize you. Is there something in common? If it is, improve that. If everyone tells you different things, listen to yourself. If you believe that it has nothing to do with your art, forget these words. Sooner or later, you will find out that some criticism helps strengthen you writing, and some critics may destroy it. Start to work with it now. When you just learn how to write it is easy to learn how to work with it.
